For people living in a democratic country, news has become an important way to participate in areas they concerned, such as social justice, environmental issues or political incident. In Taiwan, political parties have control over some of the medias. In addition, there are a lots of Internet medias happening around. The information is now constricting people’s mind under a limited frame.
This artwork tries to talk about message distortion. I collected some news happening in Taiwan, and replaced the photos by changing the model in it. In this way, I try to say that there’s no 100% message transmission. Every message we send to others will be distorted by people’s mouth and mind. Everything we know has always been re-interpret in our mind.
I put the newspaper in a traditional tent of Taiwanese indigenous people with a device playing Taiwan indigenous radio. I try to honor the indigenous people who are still sitting in front of Presidential House. The indigenous groups have been there protesting over a year. They want to fight for the right of indigenous people. However the government and mass media ignore it. It is not a news, but it’s happening. And the public even doesn't aware of this protest. Isn't this the most ironic thing to talk about the meaning of news and the value of morality?
Nobody should be an outsider. Even though I am not a aboriginal person, I recognize the value of indigenous people. That is all I wanted to say.
Message Distortion,A message loses of its details after few mouth-to-mouth transmissions.
I will use a World Map, and nail pushpin all around the countries that are under controversies, such as Kosovo, Abkhazia, Somaliland and Taiwan. There will be extra nail pushpin provided as well in the showroom, so the viewers can mark the countries they think that should have a right to be independent. For example, Taiwan is a country that has overall jurisdiction, but it is not recognized by the world as a country. Also there are some other countries are also in a similar situation. Through the way of marking itself on the map, this artwork is trying to talk about the political realism in the international society. Weak countries can only be the scapegoat under the interest exchange between powerful countries and never will have a chance to speak for themselves.
